Short stays in the Schengen area are limited to a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period. To check any day, count back 180 days from it and make sure the days you spent inside add up to no more than 90.
The Schengen area has 29 countries: 25 EU member states plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Cyprus and Ireland are not part of it. The 90 days are a limit for the whole area, not per country.
The 90/180 rule does not cover stays on an EU residence permit or a long-stay (D-type) visa. If you hold a short-stay visa, the period of authorised stay printed on the visa sticker applies. If it is shorter than 90 days, do not rely on this calculator.

The Entry/Exit System (EES) registers entries, exits and refusals for non-EU nationals on a short stay. It became fully operational on 10 April 2026, replaces passport stamping and detects overstays automatically.
Penalties are set by each country. Under the EU Return Directive an entry ban shall not in principle exceed five years, and can be longer for a serious threat to public policy or security.
